The History of The Ladies Auxiliary in The Years of

1990’s

  • 1991, Suggestions for fund raisers for the year were discussed.  Ideas included antique show, camper show, blue grass show, bus trip to Atlantic City, selling crab knives, teen dance, CPR classes, babysitting course and card parties.  A teen dance was scheduled for 2/15 from 7-10pm. Admission was $2.00 and ages were 10-15.  Elaine Guy and Judy Copsey ran for color guard for the Southern Maryland Ladies Auxiliary.   $200.00 was approved to purchase kitchen items.  Items purchased were glass bowls, cheese/cracker trays, paring knives and pitchers.  78 tables were sold for the Holiday Bazaar.  Nettie Jo Harding was welcomed into the auxiliary.  Debbie Greenwell contacted social services and names of needy families were obtained.  Food baskets were prepared for them and delivered.  It was voted to give $15,000 to the fire department to upgrade the Bingo area for storage of Engine 21 and for use of bingo at the carnival.
  • 1992, It was voted to hire a Redskinette for $60.00/hr. at a sports card show in September.  The table rental would be $35.00.  We will also try to get John Riggins. The event was cancelled.   The ladies won a trophy for best appearing Auxiliary in the Leonardtown parade.  Only 3 tables were rented for the card show.  We catered Waldorf Volunteer Fire Departments Banquet for 285 people.  A written vote was taken and it was decided to no longer have a “member of the year”.  Discussion was held on what we would like to do to celebrate our 45th year anniversary next year.
  • 1993, Cindy Adams rejoined the auxiliary. Gifts for the fire department was decided to be a Hurst tool for $7190.00, a lawn tractor for $4200.00, 3 communications systems for $1516.00, window blinds for the social hall and upstairs for $1617.00 and 5 sets of running gear for a total of $19,532.05.  The 45th Anniversary Committee recommended we invite all charter and past members.  It was decided to have finger foods and suggested that the firemen helped serve the food.  The party is scheduled for July 24th.  It was decided to have plaques made for past president and charter members.  The Auxiliary printed a cookbook.  The cost for printing was $4.50 each.  Karen Mattingly, Jenny Copsey, Kathie Guy were voted into the auxiliary.   The auxiliary lost $700.00 on the last dance.  It was discussed whether to continue having dances.  64 tables were rented for the Bazaar this year.
  • 1994, We received a $50.00 donation and a letter thanking the auxiliary for their help during the ice storm from the Fortress House and a letter of thanks from the fire department also.  We hosted the Southern Maryland Ladies Auxiliary meeting here at the fire house on 4/6.  Judy Copsey was installed 5/4 as senior color Bearer for the Southern Maryland Ladies Auxiliary.  Barbara Horn and Valerie Tinnerman were voted into the Auxiliary.  The auxiliary was very busy in 1994 catering weddings, retirement parties and reunions. We had at least 1 catering job a month and also had multiple country line dances.
  • 1995, The auxiliary presented the fire department with 10 sets of running gear a Humat valve, two breathing apparatus and $3800 to be used for gym equipment.  It was discussed that the fire department has so many new members that they are running out of helmets.  They have requested that we purchase 12 new helmets for them at a cost of $150.00 each.  Carrie Brown was welcomed as a new member.  The fire department asked for assistance in having a Boo-thru for Halloween. They need members to dress up and give out bags of candy.  We can get blue aprons for all the men that help the Ladies.
  • 1996, The fire department gave us $14,000 to be used in the kitchen.  The kitchen committee met to decide what to purchase.  They decided on mats for the floor by the stove and sink, a mixer, electric can opener, bowls, butcher knives, water pitchers, large pots, mesh skimmer, sauce pans, cheese knife, tongs, ladles, half chafing dishes and large plastic trays.  Delores Ellis was voted into the auxiliary.  Carol Cavanaugh was voted into the auxiliary.  It was decided that the auxiliary will purchase Fire Department afghans for the Chief and President at the banquet.
  • 1997, We hosted the Southern Maryland ladies Auxiliary meeting.  Amy Copsey was voted in as a member.  Judy Copsey was sworn in as treasurer for the Southern Maryland Ladies Auxiliary.  The dedication of the memorial was held in October.  The auxiliary purchased cut flowers for each deceased member’s family to place on the memorial.  We also ordered napkins with the dedication date and information on them.  The Bylaws were amended to add a life member section.  It was decided that a “life member” was an active member who has rendered 25 years of service.  Five members became life members at the banquet in 1998.  They are Agnes Stasch, Peggy Guy, Judy Copsey, Susannah Fowler and Glenda Hill.
  • 1998, The Auxiliary paid $3500 for the lumber for construction of a pole building at the carnival lot.  Heather Jacobs and Lydia Chagnon were voted into the auxiliary.  In November, the first Longaberger Basket Bingo was held for the auxiliary.  It was a huge success.  Elaine Guy, Nancy Hayden, Diane Lacey and Janet Montgomery were nominated for lifetime member status.
  • 1999, Sherry Lacey was voted into the Auxiliary.  The Amish community donated a quilt for us to raffle at our November Bazaar.  Judy Copsey was installed as 2nd Vice President for the Southern Maryland Ladies Auxiliary.  We had a joint dinner theater with VFW Ladies Auxiliary in November. The Port Tobacco Players Performed.
