The 1990's

1990

  • Ladies Aux donates $24,378.30 for station cascade system (March 1990).
  • Bingo building to be replaced (March 1990).
  • ARTICLE II, SECTION III, Part D, LIFE MEMBERSHIP;
  • Any member who has rendered 25 years of active service to the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department shall automatically become a “LIFE MEMBER” (March 1990).
  • The bid of $75,000 approved to complete the upstairs of the firehouse (bunkroom, President’s office, restrooms, etc.) (April 1990 SBM).
  • Upstairs sprinkler system approved for 100% coverage (May 1990).
  • Great showing at the SMVFA convention parade (May 1990) where the following awards were won:

Second Best Appearing Tanker
Best Appearing “Pierce” Apparatus in the line of parade
Best Appearing Color Guard
Running Gear Contest
Leadership and Fire Prevention Special Award
  • County retirement increase to $200.00 per month (May 1990).
  • Station fuel tanks removed (May 1990).
  • The Grumman bid for the refurbishment Engine 22 was approved (June 1990).
  • 1990 to be the last year the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department would sponsor the Jousting Tournament (July 90).
  • BOD authorized company to sell Engine 25 (August 1990 BOD).
  • Engine 22 placed back in service Dec 10, 1990 (December 1990).

1991

  • Engine 25 sold for $19,000 (January 1991).
  • Forestry asked for “Volunteer Dozer Operators” in Mechanicsville (April 1991).
  • First Cadet Committee formed (April 1991).
  • Henry J. Fowler, Jr., George A Hayden, Elmer Johnson, J.R. (Binky) Guyther, and William G. Wilkerson 
  • Discussion about property behind station (Smith property) being purchased (August 1991 BOD).
  • Bid for replacement of Brush 2 mailed out (August 1991).
  • Loretta House Burned (August 1991).
  • Apparatus committee recommends taking Engine 21 (1950 Ford) out of service (November 1991).
  • Engine 21 (1950 Ford) placed out of service (December 1991).
  • Forestry bulldozer placed in service (December 1991).
  • Discussion about the use of PASS alarms (December 1991).

1992

  • Discussion about the purchase of the land (Strine property) (January 1992 BOD).
  • Fire Tax reduced by 2 cents per/hundred (January 1992).
  • Thomas Maddox “Mac” Burroughs passes away (March 1992).
  • Trauma bags and oxygen to be carried on engines (March 1992).
  • Parade to be held on August 16,1992 in the village (April 1992).
  • Offer made of Strine property in the amount of $40,000 (June 1992).
  • Brush 2 (1992 Chevrolet) placed in service July 6, 1992 (July 1992).
  • Smith property purchased October 28, 1992.
  • F. Elliot Burch, Sr. passes away (December 1992).
  • The county was to fund north end water line along Route 5 North from Route 6 (December 1992).

1993

  • Upgrade to Engine 23 to a water supply pumper complete (January 1993).
  • Department donates old 3” hose to Port Royal Volunteer Fire Department (March 1993).
  • Fire loss as of the first week in July was $90,000 (July 1993).
  • At the August 10th Board of Directors meeting Mr. F.E. “Sonny” Burch donated the building lots that would become the future site of the Golden Beach Station (August 1993 BOD).
  • A motion was made to pay off the station mortgage in September 1993 (August 1993).
  • A. Guy won a contest. He won a complete headset assembly for Engine 22. He entered the contest at the Fire Expo (September 1993).
