 Website Overview

In the summer of 1997, Junior Firefighter Ron Raley was surfing through the Internet when he came across several fire department websites. Astonished by the purpose, design, and content, he became determined to design and maintain a website for the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department.

At this time, Mr. Raley searched for a potential Internet Service Provider (ISP) to host the website. He contacted Eaglenet, Inc. of California, MD who offered our department free service, which included a dialup connection and web hosting service. At the very next business meeting, Mr. Raley brought up to design, implement, and maintain a website for the firefighters of Mechanicsville. Through a majority vote, the proposal passed.

Construction of the site immediately followed. In an effort to deploy images on the website, the department invested in a Hewlett Packard scanner. The initial design was rather plain, but popular throughout Southern Maryland.

On January 17, 1998, at the annual awards banquet, President Will Williams awarded Mr. Raley a Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department Homepage award for his outstanding effort and dedication to the project.

As the number of website visitors began to climb, the demand for more online photos became an issue. By a majority vote of the department, MVFD responded to this demand and invested in two Kodak digital cameras. Housed in the command vehicle and on the Rescue Squad, all fire department personnel have been trained in their use.

As MVFD Online continued to grow, the need for more updates, more web space, and more professional web hosting service arrived. Mr. Raley decided to convert MVFD Online into a completely database-driven web application using a software language called ColdFusion. This software is very popular and used for professional web applications throughout the world.

Mr. Raley utilized Coldfusion MX, Dreamweaver MX, and Microsoft Access 2000 to develop the the new and improved website of 2003. This upgrade has allowed MVFD Online to deploy a members only section, more news / images (updateable by members), a custom guestbook, random images, and so much more!

In the summer of 2003, Mr. Raley decided to take his web development capability a step further. He started a business and began developing websites for all Fire/EMS organizations. This new service, Firehouse Solutions, has become very successful.

At over 1,000 unique visitors each day, our department stands proud of our online success. Whether you're a Fire/EMS Volunteer or a member of the community, we welcome you to MVFD Online and hope that you will visit often.
