I have visited before and was interested in knowing how many candles have been lit so far. This is the most touching website I have visited in regards to 9-11. Thank you Mechanicsville Volunteers for making this available for all. God Bless you...
Nice site! Sorry for your loss. Our department just went through the loss of one of our own. Junior firefighter(just 14yrs old) was responding to the station for a call and was struck by a car and was killed. Our prayers are with you all. Take care in '03

TO ALL OF THE MANY WONDERFUL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD, WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS AND THE SO MANY NICE THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN DONE FOR OUR FAMILY IN OUR TIME OF SORROW. YOU ALL IN THE EMERGENCY FIELD WERE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DID OR SAID.
AS A MOTHER, I WOULD WORRY ABOUT HIM NOT SLEEPING OR EATING RIGHT,
BUT AS I READ THE WONDERFUL LETTERS, I KNOW IN MY HEART HE HAD ALOT
OF FAMILY OUT THERE TAKING CARE OF HIM WHEN HE WASNT THERE. AS A MOTHER, I ALSO WORRIED ABOUT SOMETHING HAPPENING OR GOING WRONG IN THIS LINE OF WORK.
YOU ALL SHOULD BE COMMENDED FOR COUNTLESS HOURS YOU DEVOTE NOT ONLY IN SAVING LIVES, BUT THE MANY HOURS OF TRAINING TO ENSURE YOU
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING WHEN YOU GET THERE. AS MY KIDS GREW UP,
I TRIED VERY HARD TO TEACH THEM THAT "THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS CANT",
YOU DO YOUR BEST AND THAT IS ALL I CAN ASK". BUT I ALSO WANTED THEM TO KNOW MORAL VALUES AND RESPECT FOR ALL. HE LOVED ALL OF YOU AND AS I READ YOUR COMMENTS, I KNEW HE SHOWED IT IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.
HE WAS A "GOOD TIME CHARLIE", PLAYING JOKES, LAUGHING AT ANYTHING;
BUT HE LOVED HIS PROFESSION AND HE LOVED HIS MUSIC. ILL MISS HIM,
WELL MISS HIM, EVEN PEOPLE THAT NEVER MET HIM WILL MISS HIM, BUT WE
WILL GET THROUGH THIS BECAUSE GOD PREVAILS.
THE DEDICATION AND HONOR DISPLAYED AT HIS FUNERAL WAS BREATHTAKING.
YOU IN THE EMERGENCY FIELD ARE BROTHERS AND FAMILY. THE POEM I FOUND IN HIS DATETIMER WAS SO VERY TRUE. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO FACE, BUT YOU DO YOUR JOB AND YOU DO IT VERY WELL. I WANT
THE PUBLIC TO UNDERSTAND, YOU DEDICATE YOUR TIME, ELIMINATE SLEEP, EAT HABITS, AND GIVE UP EVERYTHING THAT YOU COULD POSSIBLY GIVE UP TO SAVE LIVES ----AND IT BECAUSE YOU CARE----- YOU DONT GET PAID-----
YOU JUST CARE.
AS MUCH AS I MISS MY BABY, SON, AND MY MAN, HE BROUGHT COMMUNITIES TOGETHER, AND SHOWED HOW THE EMERGENCY FIELD EXCELS THEMSELVES
WHEN ONE OF THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS DIE IN THE LINE OF DUTY. I HAD NEVER
SEEN ANYTHING SO BEAUTIFUL; OTHER THAN THE SNOW ON CHRISTMAS DAY.
IT HADNT SNOWED IN SO MANY YEARS ON CHRISTMAS DAY AND I KNOW IT
WAS MY ANGEL IN HEAVEN TELLING US ALL, BE STRONG, THERE IS NO SUCH
WORD AS CANT--ITS TOUGH, BUT DO THE BEST YOU CAN DO. HELL BE THERE
TO PROTECT ALL OF HIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN THE EMERGENCY FIELD,
HELL PROTECT US, AND EVEN THOUGH I CRY EVERYDAY, I KNOW HE IS AN
ANGEL THAT WILL BE SENT DOWN TO A BAD ACCIDENT OR A BURNING BLDG,
AND SEND A CHILD BACK TO THEIR MOTHER, A HUSBAND, WIFE, GRANDMOTHER,
OR HIS EXTENDED FAMILIES BACK TO THEIR HOMES SAFE. WE LOVE YOU ALL!!

We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Justin's family and his fellow brothers and sisters at MVFD and MVRS. We did not have the honor of knowing Justin....we have only heard and read the heartfelt statements here online. What wonderful stories.........his legacy will live on through all of you. The letter his mother wrote was so touching...........and we know so painful to write. May God comfort you.. You are in our thoughts and prayers.....

To all the family and friends of Justin Mangrum, I did not know Justin but from all I have read in the guestbook and the Washington Post today (Sunday) I am sure he was a wonderful person to all who did know him.
May memories of joy and happiness shared sustain and comfort you now and in the future.
This comes to let you all know that others are thinking of your warmly and often.
May you find strength and comfort to help you through this time of sorrow for one so deeply loved.

Although I knew him for only a month, he had become a son for me, and a brother to my children. Justin was always so kind to me and my children; he always had time to share a smile and laugh. I remember just a week ago he had us all dancing in our living room doing the bootie call. I'll never forget that night... the night that he called me mom for the first time. I felt as though he were truly my son... He would stay at the house all hours of the night... He was a mother's dream for her daughter... someone she could trust to respect and love her. I feel that he was her first true love; Justin always brought out the best in her. They would play love songs all night for each other, and they would get me to sit down with them and listen. Everything finally seemed to be going right again, as though this were God's way of telling us that thing's were going to be okay, and that all of our pain and suffering were going to be soothed. This month, this holy month, is very difficult for my family and I to endure... within the days of this month are the life's end of my last son, Joseph. This year things were so much different; it had seemed I was gaining another son whereas I would be enduring the anniversery of one lost to me. Words can never describe the joy that Justin brought into my life... my family's life... my daughter's life. Your son made the difference, in our lives, and in the lives of those he saved. If ever you need anything, you know that we will be there. Our love and prayers are with you always... Be strong, a mother's love for her children is among the strongest forces on earth; the same holds true for her children. Always will Justin be watching over you and your family. Be strong, for him, and your family. They need you now more than ever.

I had the pleasure to work with Justin Magnum when I was up at Budd's Creek. Truly an exceptional guy who knew his stuff down pat. Always full of energy and willing to help.
Now he will join the other great men and women in heaven who are waiting and watching to keep us safe on our next call.
Please pass on my heart felt regret for their and your departments loss. "We can never replace great people, but we can only try to become like them one day."
