By Mechanicsville Volunteers
February 24, 2026

At 2205 hours on February 24, 2026, units were dispatched to the 36000 block of Roosevelt Boulevard in Chaptico for a reported structure fire with entrapment. 911 callers advised that a large barn was on fire with a person trapped inside. Chief 2, Chief 2A, Engine 22, Squad 2, Tanker 2, and surrounding departments responded.

Safety 5A arrived to find a 50-by-100-foot barn with heavy fire conditions visible throughout the structure. Family members on scene confirmed that one individual remained inside. Engine 52 laid out and began stretching an attack line as crews quickly went to work. A Working Incident Taskforce was requested, along with two fire boats to assist with water supply operations.

Chief 2 established Command, with Chief 2A assigned as Attack Group Supervisor. Firefighters operated with multiple handlines, making a strong knock on the fire while working to establish a sustained water supply. Water supply was secured at a nearby boat ramp.

Once the fire was brought under control, firefighters conducted a primary search of the structure. During the search, crews located one victim who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At 2323 hours, the fire was declared out. Crews remained on scene mopping up hot spots and conducting extensive overhaul operations. Command held Companies 1, 2, and 5 along with an ambulance, while all other units were released.

The fire remains under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Maryland State Police.

The Officers and Members of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
