Saturday, May 5, 2018 was the kickoff to the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen's Association 71st Annual Convention held at the Newburg Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department in Newburg, MD. The day started with the Memorial Service honoring those members who passed away last year. A dinner meeting followed the Memorial Service where awards were given out. Three of MVFD's members were recognized at this meeting. Fire Prevention Officer, Teresa Palmer was presented with the David Gott Fire Prevention Award, Board of Director, Henry Fowler was presented with 50 Years of Service certificate, and Board of Director, Bobby Johnson was inducted into the SMVFA Hall of Fame.

Sunday, May 6, 2018 was the Annual Convention Parade. Members cleaned the rigs from top to bottom beginning Monday and worked through the week making sure everything was complete. The department was able to send over the following units: Car 2, U-2A, Brush 2, UTV 2, Old Engine 21, Engine 23, and Rescue Engine 22. In addition to the units sent, we were able to have the department banner with two members marching as well as Junior Fire Chief Paul DeGraves, and members of the Auxiliary. The department came home with the following trophies: Best Appearing Fire Truck (25+ years old, In-Service), 2nd Best Appearing Rescue Engine, Best Appearing ATV/UTV, Best appearing Junior Fire Chief and the Best Appearing Company Overall in the Association (3 pieces or more). A huge "thank you" to Sergeant Tyler Burroughs for his hard work in coordinating all the activities and cleaning of the apparatus leading up to the parade.

MVFD would like to congratulate Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department for winning the big one!
