Painting For A Good Cause

Leelynd Higgs is one of those little boys who hopes and dreams of being just like the firefighters he sees when a truck zooms by with its lights flashing and horns blowing. Beyond the sights and sounds, he sees their courage and bravery to help others, according to the young boy’s family.

He began painting bird houses in April, decorating them every morning for two months with the help of Patricia Weaver, his great-grandmother; Cheri Alderson, his grandmother; and Ashlee Higgs, his mother. With many people interested in helping Leelynd make his project a success, the family was able to raise $500, a total of 50 birdhouses.

He attended the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department monthly meeting on June 13 to give his donation to the men and women that he greatly admires.

Leelynd was awarded a ride with the fire department in the Independence Day parade at Golden Beach on Saturday, July 2.

My son Leelynd admires all of you! There are no words to describe the feeling while watching my little boy's dreams come true as he was riding on the firetruck and hanging out with real firefighters this past Saturday in the parade! His eyes lit up and even days later when telling other family and friends about it, his eyes would lit up again.. every time!

I want to thank all of you for your service and safety to the community, but also for being so amazing, showing us hospitality and acknowledging my son's hard work at only 3 years old! In Leelynd's eyes, the real heroes aren't superman or spiderman- they are the police, firefighters and rescue personnel of our community!
