Head On Collision Near Helen with Fatality

At 1345 hours Station 2, EMS Stations 29, Charles 2 and Charles 15 were alerted to the area of 30841 Point Lookout Road near Helen for the motor vehicle collision reported head-on with entrapment. There was no Medic unit available so Charles Paramedic Ambulance 167 was started due to the information received.
Squad 2 (Lt Hemming) and Chief 22B (Craig) responded at dispatch and arrived to find a two vehicle accident confirming head-on and at least one pinned. The crew immediately went to work stabilizing the vehicle and preparing for extrication. Initial patient assessments were done and the trapped victim was a high priority one. Personnel removed the driver's door and utilized a ram to push the dash off the patient's legs to rapidly extricate him as he was now in trauma arrest. Once extricated, he was turned over to Paramedic Ambulance 167 for ALS intervention.
Medic 2, who cleared their previous call, was alerted at 1354 hours. After confirming there were three patients, command held the three EMS units that were on the scene and placed the others available.
EMS personnel from Ambulance 297 and Charles Ambulance 27 were tending to the two occupants of the other vehicle and requested a medevac for the both of them. Trooper 7 was alerted and Engine 23, who was already enroute to the scene, was re-routed to establish the landing site on Avie Lane, prior to the accident scene.
Despite the valiant efforts of the personnel on the scene, the victim who was pinned succuumbed to his injuries.
Trooper 7 flew the other two victims to Medstar at the Washington Hospital Center as priority two's. Squad 2 remained on the scene cleaning up fluids and debris from the roadway. The State Highway Administration was called to the scene to assist with road closure and detouring traffic away from the scene.
Units operated on the scene for approximately one hour and thirty five minutes. Chief 22B held the "Point Lookout Road Command."
