House Fire in Charlotte Hall with Burn Victim

By Assistant Chief John Raley
December 19, 2006

At 0656 hours, units from Mechanicsville, Hughesville, Hollywood and Mechanicsville EMS were alerted to 38087 East Edinview Court for the reported house on fire.

As additional calls were received, callers reported fire visible and a loud explosion was heard. With this information, the working fire dispatch was added bringing tankers from Hollywood and Benedict, along with Water Supply 5 from the Seventh District. First arriving units stretched handlines to the residence and began an aggressive attack. Upon further scene size-up, a burn victim was located and EMS quickly summoned a medevac and additional EMS units after their assessment. The victim was reported to have suffered inhalation burns as well as burns to over fifty percent of his body. Two family pets also perished in the blaze.

Fire Chief 2 (Johnson) held the "East Edinview Court Command."

Due to the volume of fire, Truck 7's ladder pipe was used to knock down the bulk of the fire and crews then advanced handlines back into the structure to mop up.

Water Supply 5 set up on a hydrant at Market Drive and Business Center Drive for tanker shuttle operations.

Squad 2 re-routed from the scene and established a landing site in the parking lot of the St. Mary's Hospital Express Care for U.S. Park Police Eagle 2. Ambulance 295 with the paramedic from Charles Ambulance 167 treated the burn patient who was medevaced to Medstar in Washington D.C. Squad 2 then proceeded to the scene and assisted with salvage and overhaul.

The incident is being investigated by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.
