Engine and Tanker on Church Fire in Benedict
By Chief John Raley
January 29, 2010
On January 29, 2010 at 2:33PM, the engine company was alerted to 7209 Benedict Avenue for the reported building fire.
Engine 21 (Sgt Barnes) responded with five personnel. Units from the Benedict V.F.D. arrived to find smoke showing from the eves of a church. Tanker 2 (Sgt Colvin) was then alerted however placed in service once on the scene.
Crews advanced two attack lines and found heavy smoke throughout. Crews had trouble locating the fire initially and a second alarm was requested as a precaution. Firefighters found fire in the oil fed furnace in the basement with extension into the ductwork and heavy timber floor joists. The fire was extinguished and crews worked to open up the floor area and ventilate the structure.
Command held units from Benedict, Hughesville, Waldorf Truck 3, La Plata Truck 1 and Calvert Squad 6.
Charles Chief 5 (Hill) held the command and units operated for just over an hour.
