Working Fire in Avenue

By The Mechanicsville Volunteers
January 25, 2010

At 1143, Stations 5, 1, 2, Truck 1, Water Supply 5 along with EMS Stations 59 and 19 were alerted for a Working House Fire in the area 37655 Louis Bailey Road in Avenue.

Engine 24(Lt. Cox) responded with 6 volunteers and arrived as the 3rd due engine. The Crew from Engine 24 was assigned to the fire attack group. Crews were directed to Side "Delta" of the structure with a handline where they worked for about forty-five minutes darkening down the fire.

Chief 5 (Nelson) established "Louis Bailey Road Command". Crews battled heavy flames for an extended period of time before bringing the fire under control. The crews from Engine 24, Truck 1, Squad 5 and Engine 21 worked together to control the blaze. Water supply was established at Station 5, where tankers shuttled water to the scene. Extensive overhaul was conducted by all crews until all the hot spots were extinguished.

Crews operated on the scene for just over five hours. The incident is under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshals Office.

Charles Engine 53 filled Station 2 for a short period of time but rerouted to Station 1. Prince George's Tanker 836 transferred to Station 2 until Tanker 2 was placed back in service.
